Gordon Greenidge: A cricketing legend and symbol of racial pride

By Harsh Thakor*  November 2024 marked the 50th anniversary of Gordon Greenidge’s debut in Test cricket at Bangalore in 1974. A cornerstone of West Indian cricket, Greenidge was among the most complete opening batsmen of his era, seamlessly blending rock-solid defense with explosive aggression. He wielded his bat with the force of a sledgehammer, striking with the precision of a technician. His powerful square cuts, ferocious drives, and authoritative pulls showcased his unmatched ability to dominate bowlers, evoking comparisons to legends like Viv Richards.

Why do countries involved in killing innocent people get listed in top human development indexes?

By Bharat Dogra  While world discourse on various issues has increased as never before with the rapid spread of media, social media, research institutions and think-tanks, it is disturbing to realize that at the same time the most important issues and tasks are getting increasingly neglected. This is particularly regrettable at a time when very serious life-threatening problems are increasing.

With extremists increasingly influencing governance, will Bangladesh declare itself Islamic state?

By NS Venkataraman*  The violent uprising in Bangladesh, organized by a faction of students with allegiance to Islamic ideology and supported by certain Islamic extremists, has created a volatile situation. Reports indicate that even the Bangladesh Army Chief endorsed these events, leaving the then Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, with no alternative but to flee the country.

Democracies fail to hold offenders accountable, allow them to escape with little consequence

By NS Venkataraman*  There has been a long-standing debate about the best form of governance for a nation. Should it be dictatorship, military rule, rule by a select few (as seen in China's communist regime), monarchy (where a ruler governs for life), or democracy? Each system has its advocates and critics, with some political analysts arguing that no one system can be deemed universally superior due to differing merits and drawbacks.

Is Jagjit Singh Dallewal destined to same fate as GD Agrawal and Devki Nandan Sharma?

By Sandeep Pandey*  Bhartiya Janata Party governments don’t believe in intervening in a situation where somebody is on indefinite fast for some cause and saving their lives. 86 years old Professor Guru Das Agrawal aka Swami Gyan Swaroop Sanand had served as a faculty member at IIT Kanpur and later Member Secretary of Central Pollution Control Board. He sat on five fasts during Manmohan Singh’s government but never died.

Is it possible to reduce accidents by 50%, save 1.6 million lives, prevent 200 million injuries in a year?

By Bharat Dogra*  The extent of the enormous distress caused day after day, year after year is often not realized. One reason for this is that the incredibly huge number of occupational accidents suffered by workers are not considered in many counts of accidents and there is a widespread tendency to look at accidents mainly and sometimes only in terms of road accidents, although the number of other accidents taken together is much higher. Generally, at the level of research, data collection and policy making there has been a failure to take a comprehensive view of all kinds of accidents.

Turbulence in North East India calls for emergence of political Singham

By Sudhansu R Das  India is facing mounting crises both internally and externally. The actions of our neighbors—China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh—pose serious concerns. China is in relentless expansion mode, Pakistan’s political rhetoric on Kashmir is hollow, and Bangladesh’s leaders are inciting hatred against minority communities who significantly contribute to the country's economy. Such blind hatred will not only impoverish Bangladesh but push it into a dark and irreparable age.
