Kantilal Parmar |
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has disposed of the complaint made by a Gujarat Dalit rights activist, Kantilal Parmar, who had sought action against the authorities, which had allegedly dismissing 176 sanitary workers of Saurashtra region’s Amreli municipality a year ago. It asked the state’s principal secretary, labour and employment, to take “necessary” action.
In an intimation to the state official, a copy of which was sent to Parmar, NHRC said, “This complaint be transmitted to the concerned authority for such action as deemed appropriate. The authority concerned is directed to take appropriate action within eight weeks associating the complainant/victim and to inform them of the action taken in the matter.”
In a statement, Parmar said, the sanitary workers had made “frequent representations to the Amreli municipality authorities, including the district collector, and the Gujarat chief minister.” They also held agitation against the Amreli municipality for instating them.” However, the authorities refused to budge, which made him approach the NHRC.
