In a letter to the director, Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) and other officials of the GMRC, as also the Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation mayor, senior state activist Jatin Sheth, convener, Nagrik Sashaktikaran Manch, has sought urgent intervention to ensure that the roads on which their contracting firms are working to lay down metro rail route in the city should be maintained on a day to day basis.
Insisting that there is a need to tie up with best firms who repair roads continuously as soon as they are damaged due to metro work, Sheth, who has launched Improve Roads, Save Lives campaign, said that the work for the metro has been going on for one-two years, and commuters are forced to use damaged roads. Damaged roads and potholes lead to dust pollution, making it difficult and tiring particularly for two wheeler riders.
Claiming that the roads are unsafe for the two wheeler riders, who galore on the city roads, Sheth said, “You claim the use of state of art technology. If that is so, why are your contractors failing to maintain roads? This question needs urgent address. All your contracting firms are ISO 9000 certified companies, as we understand. They are supposed to maintain the surrounding work areas, keeping them in good condition to avoid any chances of mishaps and accidents.”
